Summer sidewalk temperatures-in the shade vs. in the sun
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Brad Lancaster shows us the dramatic summer temperature differences of public walkways in the shade vs. in the full sun. This video also shows you how simple changes that plant the rain and grow living shade can vastly improve our comfort, mood, and health; while also rehydrating our communities. It illustrates how we need to expand the public rights-of-ways, or public commons, in our communiti...
Comparing summer night time temperatures: Cooling rain gardens vs. heating pavement
Просмотров 2 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Brad Lancaster shows us dramatic pre-sunrise temperature differences of paved and unpaved areas in the urban environment, so you can see what heats us up, and what cools us down (and by how much), on summer nights. So, you can make informed choices on how to transform your home, neighborhood, and street for more a more comfortable, joyous, and productive life for all. Filmed August 2023 I use a...
How wall color can cool (or heat) you by over 25˚F (13˚C), & shade can cool you by over 45˚F (25˚C)
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Light colored exterior walls-exposed to full sun-are over 25˚F (˚C) cooler than darker colored walls; while shaded walls (whatever the color) are over 45˚F (˚C) degrees cooler than walls exposed to the full sun. I discovered this by comparing the temperature of different colored west-facing walls with a hand-held infrared thermometer on a summer afternoon when the ambient temperature was 102˚F ...
Harvesting +30,000 gallons of roof runoff in tree basins for FREE
Просмотров 6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
See how we harvest over 30,000 gallons (114,000 liters) of roof runoff in tree basins to passively shade and cool the building from which we harvest the water. This system was created in 1996 by two people in two hours, only using hand shovels. We did the work in the rain, because that is the funnest time and you get instant feedback from the water flow. No materials were purchased, imported, o...

Rain-Irrigated LIVING Air Conditioners shading and cooling neighborhood streets by 38˚F or 21˚C!

Brad Lancaster shows how native food-bearing trees and understory vegetation planted within or beside passive rain- and stormwater-harvesting rain gardens is able to shade and cool the neighborhood street by over 38˚F or 21˚C! It is not just the shade that cools. It is also the cooling effect of the passively harvested water that cycles through the life of the soil-carbon sponge. For more on th...
Maximize the harvest: diverting water from one side of street to the other to fill all rain gardens
Просмотров 7 тыс.Год назад
See a simple strategy diverting stormwater from one side of the street to the other in order to fill all the rain gardens on both sides of the street in a way that does NOT cause any flooding, but rather reduces flooding, while it also rehydrates the community and watershed and provides free irrigation water for a native food forest. Filmed August 2022 by Brad Lancaster, just as an intense stor...
Get great water flow (and more joy) from your gravity-fed rainwater tanks with full-port valves
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 года назад
Brad Lancaster shows you how the valve choice (and hose size choice) for your gravity-fed (free gravity is your only "pump") rainwater tank makes a big difference in water flow. The better the flow, the more you'll happily use your free harvested rainwater, instead of other imported waters that you have to pay for via a utility bill, a pump, and/or power costs. The key is to make it more conven...

Rainwater in evaporative coolers makes your cooler pads last forever!

And salt-free, nitrogen-rich rainwater is also the best water source for your plant and soil life. Thi...

Hola Brad! I lived in Tucson for several years and became aware of all your great work. I think I also discovered you from Kirstin Dirkson's video. I bought your fun mesquite cookbook! ;) I'm down in Lake Chapala, Mexico & would love if you would consider working or consulting with the youth & municipality here as we are rapidly growing and we need help! I'm linking your website & videos on our community pages. Our rainy season has become shorter and shorter and this was our hottest dry season ever. I would also like to create a shade project in my neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta. We lost a lot of big trees and last year's hurricane and folks desperately need shade! We have a rainy season here in much of Jalisco that we should be making more of! Please keep doing what you're doing - more crucial than ever!

Here in South Carolina, we get plenty of annual rainfall, but there can be long dry spells between the rains. These techniques are great for making things more reliable and predictable, as well as for controlling run-off that can be quite problematic! I really appreciate the focus on using native plants, too. We complain about the environment, but don't realize that we're destroying the environment by introducing all these non-native plants into the local ecosystem. Most insects are specialists, not generalists, and fragmenting the ecosystem with a slew of plants that they can't use means we're literally undercutting the entire food web. No insects means no songbirds because the songbirds need insects as the protein source for chicks in the nest. So far, I've been able to get a good handle on how the water flows in my land, redirecting it and collecting it as needed. I build "beaver dam analogs" in some places and berms in others, all depending on what I have on hand, and it's absolutely wonderful to see it working with the very next rainfall!

Just had a thought which comes to nothing: theoretically, if people were daft enough to be using wells for their water in those zones (which would cause these basins to dry out because they live off the same unconfined aquifer that those wells would), this'd probably raise the level of water in those, nah?

Goodness Greatness ! This is the way to go ! Thank you sir for being a great sharer ! Unfortunately in many places on this earth where water is seasonally abundant, like in southeast Mexico where I live, the loss or lack of healthy/intelligent water culture is astounding and depressing. In our rural environment, in almost any stream where there is a natural dam of logs and branches, you will inevitably find hundreds or thousands of plastic bottles of all sorts, plastic bags, styrafoam articles, flip-flop sandles, tennis shoes, insecticide spray cans, all things plastic and garbage and to top it off... even disposable diapers by the large bag-fulls (and of course used), light bulbs etc. , etc. , etc. I must thank you for everything you share and your educational manners. Education IS culture ! Sooo sad when we lose or never acquire proper and caring water culture. Apologies for my rant folks, but I do not exaggerate
